Description
Made for the Viral Glitch Game Jam 2025, as a solo project.
You’ve been given an important quest by the king. You must make your way to the capital to warn them of an imminent threat and to send reinforcements. The journey will be tough, there’s lots of dangerous things in the forest between you and your destination. You must be prepared to predict the unpredictable as you use your wits to navigate the challenges you encounter. Battle wolves, enemy soldiers, and even a rabbit or two before reaching the capital gates and hopefully saving the day.

Key Concepts
The King’s Quest is a text based adventure game with turn based combat. As you traverse the world you’ll be met with random encounters each with a choice to be made that can lead to good or bad outcomes. You’ll need to manage your health or vigour (shown as a heart), your hunger (shown as an apple), and your stress (shown as an eye) by seeking out special encounters marked on the map with ! icons.
If you run out of vigour you’ll fail the quest and be forced to start again. Let your hunger get too high and you’ll take damage as you travel as well as increase your stress levels. Let your stress get too high and everything in the game will get harder as your character becomes confused, combat gets harder and the things you encounter will get stranger.
Predictably unpredictable
To match the theme everything in The King’s Quest has some element of randomness.
-
You’ll run into random encounters as you move around the world.
-
The choices you make won’t always lead to the outcomes you expect.
-
During combat you’ll be given a random set of moves to select from which change after every turn so you can’t stick with one predictably good strategy as you’re forced to make the best of what you’re given.
-
As your character’s stress level increases the world and the things you encounter become even more unpredictable, even more strange, and even more challenging.
Replay-able
After completing the quest you can keep replaying the game but it gets tougher with each completed run. Enemies are stronger, encounters have worse rewards and higher punishments. For those that like a challenge you can keep on going to see how many times you can complete the king's quest before the journey becomes too difficult.
