New Year is a good opportunity to make resolutions: go to the gym, eat healthily, play less video games. But what about making a resolution to relax more? There’s no way you can break that one!


A game that plays itself

The ten best games, chosen by our expert jury of representatives from GameMaker and, will each receive a cash prize of $1,500 USD!
By participating in the New Year-New Jam, you agree to the following terms:
  • The game must be made using GameMaker
  • The game has to adhere to the theme, which will be revealed on January 4th
  • The game must be uploaded to or updated on before January 18th with the appropriate event tag selected
  • Fan games and games using licenced characters will not be accepted
  • Games with the themes of illegal activities, racism, sexism, homophobia or other forms of bullying will not be accepted

How do I participate in the Game Jam?
Upload your game to during the event (January 4th to January 18th, 2023).
How do I upload my game to
To upload your game, open GameMaker and choose your game project. Select the Opera GX target and start the upload process with the click of a button. Finally, go to DevCloud to edit your game’s details and publish it. On the game metadata page, select the New Year Jam from the event drop down, select any applicable tags, click save, and your game will be entered into the competition.
When does the event start?
The event starts on January 4th, and ends on January 18th 2023.
When will the theme be revealed?
The theme will be revealed on January 4th.
Can I participate if I’m under the age of 18?
As we have a monetary prize for this competition, contestants need to be the age of majority in their country.
How do I make my game publicly available?
When submitting your game on DevCloud, make sure you go to the side menu and select Publishing, then toggle it to Public.
Can I upload my game if it’s already been released on Steam,, or other marketplaces?
No. Your game has to be made from scratch during the game jam period, from January 4th to January 18th.
What type of games can I upload?
You can upload any free and original games that you created using GameMaker. You are NOT allowed to upload:
  • Any games that infringe on existing intellectual property
  • Any games containing content and/or assets that you do not have rights to use
  • Games with themes deemed inappropriate for minors, such as drug use, sexual themes, brutal violence, disturbing visuals, etc.
  • Games with themes that include racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, religious prejudice, or other forms of hate
  • Paid games
  • Games made in other game engines
How many games can I upload?
As many as you would like. Multiple entries are allowed.
Do I still own the rights to my game after I upload?
Yes. The legal ownership of the game remains in the hands of the submitting party.
